The hill

Three castles have stood here

The building you walk into is the third attempt at this hilltop. The other two are the reason it looks the way it does.

  1. c. 1040 The first castle Raised by the Counts of Zollern on the summit, 855 metres up, with the whole Swabian Alb in view.
  2. 1423 Destroyed The Swabian League of Cities took it after a siege lasting a year. Nothing of it was left standing.
  3. 1454–1461 The second castle Rebuilt as a real fortress, and used as one, through the wars that followed.
  4. 1798 Abandoned The last Austrian occupant left. By the nineteenth century only St Michael's Chapel was still usable.
  5. 1846–1867 The third castle Friedrich Wilhelm IV commissioned Friedrich August Stüler, who looked to English Gothic Revival and the Loire. A monument, not a stronghold.

Before you go

Planning your visit

Opening hours
Two seasons. The summer season runs 28 March to 1 November and the winter season, Royal Winter Magic, opens on 20 November. Between those dates the museum rooms are closed and the castle sells a grounds-only ticket, which we do not offer.
Address
Burg Hohenzollern, 72379 Burg Hohenzollern, Germany — above Hechingen and Bisingen on the edge of the Swabian Alb.
How the visit works
Your ticket carries a specific day and a one-hour admission slot. That slot is only the window in which the ticket is scanned at admission control — once you are inside, you can stay as long as you like during opening hours. The castle is self-guided, so there is no tour to keep pace with and no language to choose.
Parking and the shuttle
Parking and the shuttle bus up to the gate are already included in the ticket price, so there is nothing further to pay on arrival for either.
Running late
If traffic delays you, the castle asks that you call its visitor information desk and they will sort the slot out rather than turn you away.

Questions

Asked before booking

Do I need to choose a time to visit Burg Hohenzollern?

Yes. An online ticket is for one specific day and one specific one-hour admission slot. The slot is only the window in which your ticket is scanned at admission control. Once you are through, you can stay as long as you like during opening hours.

Is the castle self-guided or do I have to join a tour?

Self-guided. You walk the castle complex and the museum rooms at your own pace, so the visit does not depend on which language you speak.

Is parking included in the ticket?

Yes. The castle's ticket price already covers the car park and the shuttle bus up to the gate, so there is nothing further to pay on arrival for either.

What happens if I arrive late for my slot?

The castle asks that you call its visitor information desk if traffic delays you, and they will sort the admission out rather than turn you away.

When is Burg Hohenzollern open?

There are two seasons. The summer season runs from 28 March to 1 November, and the winter season, called Royal Winter Magic, opens on 20 November. Between those dates the museum rooms are closed and the castle sells a grounds-only ticket, which we do not offer.

What is actually inside the castle?

The museum rooms hold the crown of Wilhelm II and personal effects of Frederick the Great. The Count's Hall has red marble columns, and there are two chapels, one Protestant and one Catholic.

How high is the castle?

Mount Hohenzollern reaches 855 metres above sea level, roughly 234 metres above the town of Hechingen below it.

Is there a reduced ticket?

The castle sells one reduced ticket covering pupils aged 12 and over, students, and visitors with a disability. Bring photo ID or the document the concession is based on.

Do small children need a ticket?

Children aged 4 to 11 have their own ticket. Under-4s are admitted for a nominal fee paid at the castle, so we do not sell them here.

How do I get to Burg Hohenzollern?

The castle sits on its own hill between Hechingen and Bisingen in Baden-Württemberg. Drive to the car park at the foot of the hill, and the shuttle bus included in your ticket takes you up to the gate.

Can I change the date after booking?

No. The castle does not allow tickets to be cancelled or rebooked once they are issued, so please check the day and the admission hour before you pay.

Are you the castle?

No. We are an independent booking service. We buy the official ticket on your behalf and send it to you. We are not affiliated with the operator of Burg Hohenzollern.
